Learn the basics of feeding your baby and caring for your newborn in your home! Designed for expectant and new parents, these classes cover everything from latch and positioning to diapering, soothing, and understanding your baby’s language. You’ll feel more confident from day one.
Newborn Education*
*A Newborn Education class or meeting is included (and optional) in all postpartum packages.
This class offers basic newborn education and care, along with what to expect in the first two weeks of life through the twelfth week. It is great for first time parents, as well as a great refresher course for the seasoned parent.
Newborn Education sessions discuss:
Newborn characteristics and typical newborn behaviors
What to expect in the first two weeks of life and how it differs from the following weeks and months of the the first year
How to identify hunger cues
Feeding: breast, bottle, formula and beyond; including the importance of frequency verses quantity. Burping techniques, along with paced bottle feedings are covered
Soothing techniques: discussion of young nervous systems and how to calm baby and parents
Basic care including the importance of rhythm and routine: bathing, swaddling and beyond
Healthy sleep habits: how to identify sleep cycles and rhythms and create calm routines to cope with sleep progressions
The postpartum period and what to expect: changes in birth parent’s body, recovery and the importance of allowing time to heal
Setting up for success: who can help? List of resources provided and tips for managing your postpartum helpers
Body/Breastfeeding Education
This class is designed to prepare parents for the challenges of the early weeks and to help you build a foundation for success. Every birth story is unique, bringing with it a variety of unknowns.
The purpose of this meeting is to explore common feeding challenges in the early days and to discuss practical tools and strategies that can support a positive, confident start to your parenting journey. (A Newborn Education class or meeting is included (and optional) in all postpartum packages.
Body/Breastfeeding Basics Covers:
The biology of milk production and expectations after birth
Body/Breastfeeding positions: beginner/infant and advanced/older baby positioning
Latching: what a good latch looks like and how to achieve a perfect latch
How to increase body/breastfeeding: myths vs facts
Complications: how birth story can impact a parent’s experience and milk production in the beginning
Tools: Body/Breastfeeding is learned! There are tools that can help, especially in the beginning. It never has to be all or nothing
Who can help? References and referrals are discussed. It absolutely takes a village to raise humans and teach parents
